Dome Room (Uni of Birmingham)
The University of Birmingham partnered with Giraffe Audio to undertake a comprehensive upgrade of the audio system in their Dome Performance Space. The project aimed to integrate state-of-the-art Genelec GLM-equipped speakers and replace the outdated cabling infrastructure with modern solutions that would enhance the room’s acoustics and improve sound quality for performances, lectures, and other university events. This work required careful planning and precise execution to ensure the new system not only met technical requirements but also aligned with the university’s aesthetic and functional needs.
Objectives
The goals for the Dome Performance Space upgrade were to:
Replace an ageing audio system with modern, high-performance Genelec GLM loudspeakers.
Upgrade the legacy cabling infrastructure to improve reliability and long-term performance.
Improve clarity, depth, and coverage across the Dome for a wide range of uses—from music to lectures.
Deliver a solution sympathetic to the architecture and acoustics of the dome-shaped room.
Complete all work around the university’s timetable, avoiding disruption to teaching and events.
Challenges
The Dome Performance Space is a central hub for academic lectures, rehearsals, and musical performances, meaning the upgrade had to be carried out without interfering with the university’s packed schedule. The existing audio system had become outdated, but replacing it required working at height within a complex architectural environment and navigating the natural acoustic challenges of the dome. Every phase of work had to be carefully coordinated with the university’s calendar to avoid disruptions, requiring flexibility, precise planning, and close collaboration with the University of Birmingham’s Tech and Estates teams.
Approach
Comprehensive Site Investigation and System Design
The project began with a detailed site investigation, conducted in collaboration with the university’s Tech and Estates teams. This process examined the current audio and cabling infrastructure and resulted in a formal report identifying the need for cabling upgrades and new loudspeakers. From this, Giraffe Audio developed a bespoke system design incorporating Genelec GLM-equipped speakers and new cabling, with a strong focus on functional performance and aesthetic compatibility with the Dome’s architecture.
Project Management and Installation
Project management was a critical part of the install. Giraffe Audio planned the installation schedule in close coordination with the university, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing activities. A team of IPAF-certified professionals carried out the installation, working safely at height and completing the task with precision. Comprehensive risk assessments were completed prior to the work to meet all safety and compliance requirements. Despite the complexity of working in high, hard-to-reach areas, the team completed the installation securely while maintaining the integrity of the space.
Working Around University Schedules
Giraffe Audio demonstrated adaptability throughout the project by adjusting workflow and timelines to align with the academic calendar. This meant coordinating time on site around lectures, performances, and university events. The flexible approach ensured that installation work had zero impact on operations and that the Dome Performance Space remained fully functional throughout the process.
Results
The Dome Performance Space now benefits from a completely upgraded audio system featuring Genelec GLM-equipped loudspeakers and a modernised cabling infrastructure. The result is a significant improvement in audio clarity, depth, and immersion for all types of events. The upgraded cabling ensures optimal performance from the speakers, providing consistent, high-quality sound across the venue. Delivered on time and with minimal disruption, the project has given the university a state-of-the-art performance space that will serve both audiences and performers for years to come. Close collaboration with the University of Birmingham’s Tech and Estates teams was key to the project’s success, ensuring every part of the installation aligned with the university's operational and technical expectations.
